The classification society’s annual surveys are essential for a ship’s trading eligibility. , various periodic surveys and certifications by classification societies are thus required for a vessel to continue trading to ensure its compliance with international norms and standards.
After the class surveyor determines that the vessel’s conditions, functionality, and operational and maintenance criteria are met, several certificates require an annual endorsement. The yearly surveyor endorses the certificates once the class surveyor verifies the same.

Before conducting any of these surveys, the companies appoint independent servicing agencies that are authorized to perform annual servicing and maintenance on equipment such as fire extinguishers, fixed fire extinguishing installations, annual foam compound analysis for fixed foam fire fighting installations, and annual servicing and maintenance of lifeboat equipment and launching appliances.
Annual servicing and inspection of equipment systems can be done by several organizations, including an accredited laboratory, a service firm, maker or manufacturer-trained employees, a shore-based maintenance provider, a class-approved service applier, and flag-authorized service staff.
Classification societies, serving as recognized organizations on behalf of flag states, establish inspection standards so that required certificates can be revalidated or granted by international regulations.

An extra survey can be conducted following the imposition of a condition of class on a vessel or the detection of a severe breakdown of essential equipment that could jeopardize the vessel’s seaworthiness and safety.
Dry dock surveys, also known as intermediate surveys/inspections, are a more comprehensive version of annual surveys that verify various functional, operational, and maintenance elements of shipboard equipment.
The structural strength of the vessel will be the focus of a safety construction survey. It will be examined for excessive deck or hull corrosion and the condition of watertight doors, bilge pumping and drainage systems, fire prevention equipment, and fixed and portable firefighting equipment.
Portable fire extinguishers and maintenance records and inspection routines, emergency lights and alarms, the main fire system for pressure testing, isolation valves, and foam turrets for easy operation were all checked for their condition. The readiness and use of a firefighter’s uniform and breathing apparatus are also checked. A terminal safety manager or representative inspects the ship and ensures that it operates safely by terminal requirements.
This is confined to the operational readiness of the vessel’s safety and navigation equipment, propulsion, and steering equipment and focuses primarily on the fact that the vessel is ready to cope with an emergency before, during, and during cargo transfer activities. Any deficiencies discovered during the inspection may result in the vessel being rejected or possibly being unberthed to correct the problem. If the terminal receives negative feedback, the vessel may be blocklisted from future calls or operations.
